Quote of the Day
Never laugh at live dragons. -- Bilbo Baggins, J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Hobbit"
Followup on the Naked Coffee Man of Sprinfield
Well a few months ago, I went on a scathing tear of local law enforcement while covering the case of the Naked Coffee Man of Springfield. Well, the wheels of justice have spun, and the case finally went before a jury.
It took them 20 minutes to call "horsecrap." In the words of one juror "It was all I could do to keep from laughing."
So, I guess we can all rest safer knowing that if passer by, who happens to be a cop's wife, thinks she saw you naked through a window while cutting across your lawn, it will only cost you your job and the custody of your daughter. (Not to mention legal fees.) It won't actually result in criminal charges sticking.
I was on a case once where a man was on drug possession charges after being busted for having dollars*. and a telephone. (We acquitted him, needless to say.) But the sincerity with which the prosecutor in that case pursued it, long after it was established that she had no case at all, that's the kind of stuff that makes me thankful we live in a country where we are tried by a jury of our peers.
God may bless America. But it's everyday people that keeps it working. When we vote. When we sit on juries. When we write a letter to our representatives. And when they are really out of line, when we protest.
Okay... and that was a little preachy even by my standards. I think I shall quit while I'm still ahead.
